GGG is Back in Town… But Don’t Expect Vanes Martirosyan to Remember After a Vicious 2nd Round KO…
Gennady Golovkin is one of the most devastating boxers of all time. Right now he’s the world’s pound for pound number one, although Anthony Joshua and Vasyl Lomochenko might soon have something to say about that. The Kazakh fighter is unflappable and devastating.
He fought Vanes Martirosyan last night in Southern California’s StubHub Arena. The Armenian-American was a last minute replacement for Mexico’s Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, who was unable to fight after testing positive for a banned substance.’GGG’ proved once again that there are levels in this sport.
This truly wasn’t a contest at all. Credit to Martirosyan for stepping into the ring, but he might want to change his nickname to Vanes ‘The Martyr’ after this one. He got absolutely destroyed as Golovkin displayed the sheer violence that he is capable of. For Highlights and the full fight, keep scrolling!
Martirosyan came into this fight as a heavy underdog. He’d never even fought at middleweight before. Although he came into the fight with an unbeaten record, Golovkin changed that in a flash. The first round was a teasing out period, setting up a violent finish in the second.Golovkin launched a devastating combination after he smashed his opponent’s temple with an overhand-right hook. Another pair of jabs and a final follow-up left Martirosyan sprawled face-first on the canvas and he was unable to beat the count. It was short and sweet and ended with 1:53 seconds left in the second round.
The win does come with somewhat of a bitter taste. This isn’t the fight fans wanted to see and it’s not what Golovkin would have wanted either. His rematch with ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was scrapped after the Mexican tested positive for Clenbuterol. Despite claiming that it was the result of contaminated meat in Mexico, he is still suspended until at least August 17.
Golovkin, who has an incredible record unbeaten record of 38 wins and 1 draw, promised fans that he would fight on Cinco de Mayo anyway. He’s behaved with class throughout the whole messy process of Alvarez’s drug test failure and will surely have earned himself a few more fans in the process.
